![]() ![]() Sadly, however, everything you pick up adds weight and, once you're overburdened, you'll find you can't get around as easy or fight as well. or to sell to the Quartermaster to buy other things you need. Then again, anything of value that you find is yours to keep. The coin doesn't take up any room, but everything else will eventually clog up your inventory, so you'll want to make sure you take only things you might actually need there are a lot of "trash" items laying about in dungeons that you'd never use, anyway. In typical old-school fashion, you'll need to manage your inventory as you go about your quests you will find lots of items laying about, useful things in chests and lockers, lightly used armor and items on vanquished enemies and, perhaps, the occasional stray coin here and again. You can choose any of these, but you will be able to take additional characters to assist you on your quests, so you're not locking yourself into a single, specific class when you choose your main character. Your choices include two males: a Blademaster (warrior class), a Shadowwalker (a Ninja/warrior class) and two females: a Shaman and a Sorceress. You choose your main character from four different characters (of four different classes), rather than creating a character from scratch. You are now starting your service to Avadon. At one point, when I was playing Avadon in the same room as my wife, I actually had to mute the speakers to make sure there wasn't something shambling about in our house.Īvadon: The Black Fortress weaves a tale in a fantasy world beset by beasts and demi-humans of the Farlands, protected by the tenuous Midlands Pact, which is protected by the guardians of a terrifying Black Fortress and its legendary and enigmatic Keeper, Redbeard. It's very prominent, as there is no in-game music, and whether it be the shuffling of workers as they go about their business in the castle or the strange sounds that almost sounded like signs swinging in the wind in the desert area, these environmental sound effects create an atmosphere that helps to set a backdrop for the game. The sound effects are nice and the title music is a fitting orchestral piece, but the most noticeable aspect of the sound is the ambient noise in the background. This gives you what amounts to more area on-screen and items you can actually sometimes make out before you pick them up. Remember the days of isometric, third-person, top-down, dungeon-crawl, old-school role-playing games? Avadon revisits this genre, but with the added bonus of modern high resolution displays. ![]() If you are pouring all of your stat points into a strength-driven melee strike, agility-driven ranged strike or intelligence-driven magic strike, you should be able to wipe out appropriately leveled enemies in a few hits.Įnemies do not respawn but exist in adequate number to reach the level cap pretty quickly, so try to clear places out if you feel able to.This takes me back. Stamina is mostly in the game for psychological effect and most levels can be cleared without sparing it, but this incentivizes you to save it for powerful enemies. With mages, intelligence will usually be the wisest course, but if you're trying to solo as a mage, an agility build will still be the most reslient.Ĭonsttution can increase your max HP, but most of the game's fights can be won or lost pretty quickly - either you're ready and know what do do, or you're not and you don't. I would only consider a few points in strength if needed to carry the equipment you want to, but shadow walkers are best in pretty light gear. With a shadow walker, agility is the only path that really makes sense. Beginners will tend to prefer to choose the middle tree for more of the three specialization points you earn on the way up to the level cap.įor a warrior, your main options are strength (sword and related skills, melee tanking) as a build, or agility for a bow fighter that many swear by as the game's most powerful build. Two will focus on some central theme of that job, while the middle one is always for defensive and support skills. (It would be more balanced if strength affected melee dodge and intelligence magic dodge, etc, but that is not how this game works.) So, agility characters end up defensively powerful with any character class, and reasonably formidable with bows or whatever ranged physical weapon they can carry.Īll jobs' skill trees have three vertical branches. Status immunities scale with various stats, but dodging physical/magic attacks BOTH scale with agility and not strength or int. This will be strength for melee, agility for ranged physical and intelligence for magic. ![]() The way the game works moslty supports dumping everything into the stat that determines your damage dealing. ![]()
